Four Brilliant Books for World Space Week featuring Fantastic Female Role Models
Here’s some ‘out of this world’ recommendations for World Space Week featuring strong female role models to inspire women in STEM.
1. EYFS recommendation
Look UP ~ Nathan Byron and Dapo Adeola
Rocket and her engaging, endearing enthusiasm for star gazing will completely draw you into her story as she spreads the word about the Phoenix meteor shower. A brilliant book with space facts interwoven that encourages curiosity and has a strong female STEM protagonist.
2. KS1 Recommendation
Bee’s Missions to Mars ~ Jonathan Horden and Adam Walker-Parker
Another female astronaut is shown in this super story. Bee is a space lover – even her bed is rocket shaped! In her dreams she blasts off on an incredible adventure to Mars. As she grows, we see that with courage, ambition, hard work and commitment Bee can make her dreams a reality. Another brilliant role model.
3. KS2 Recommendation
Hidden Figures ~ Margot Lee Shetterly and Laura Freeman
This brilliant book tells the true story of Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Christine Darden who were key mathematicians at NASA and provided calculations for some of America’s first ground breaking explorations into space. As African American women they faced racism and gender discrimination but they persisted and broke barriers with their brilliance.
4. A great assembly book recommendation
Little People Big Dreams Mae Jemison ~ Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and Janna Morton
A brilliant short biography of Mae Jemison, the first black woman to travel into space!
